Digital Art-Space

Discover digital art during Museumnacht Maastricht

Research and approach

Digital art created with Creative Coding is generative and often has no meaning other than that the visual output can be beautiful or ugly. In addition, there is no attention for digital art during Museumnacht. With this project I wanted to tackle this by investigating how you can illuminate digital art in a meaningful way during Museumnacht in an interactive application. I collaborated with the Museum Night, the target group, art experts, YOUNG OFFICE and Bonnefantenmuseum who have provided support for this project.

According to the art experts and the target group, art is meaningful if someone makes it themselves or if there is a story or message behind it. In addition, it is even more meaningful for the target group if there is a similarity in the story with their own living environment.

Digital Art-Space

During Museumnacht, visitors can make their own digital art in the Digital Art-Space. This is done in an interactive way where they can create a work of art with face tracking. They can upload this in the Digital Gallery, which is a digital Museum Night location that is not physically there. In the Bonnefantenmuseum, works of art by visitors are displayed on screens or projected. The visitor scans the QR code on a sign in the Bonnefantenmuseum with which he goes to the Digital Art-Space, where the visitor can create an artwork after which he can upload it to the Digital Gallery by swiping it to a screen as the last step.

In this way, visitors become acquainted with digital art in an interactive way and it contributes to the goal of Museumnacht Maastricht.

In April 2023 this resulted with more than 400 participants who created a piece of art and shared throughout Bonnefantenmuseum during Museumnacht

Who owns the art and who is in control?

In this project, this discussion has been invoked. As the maker of the platform, am I the artist, or the visitors who create works of art? Is the art mine or theirs? Who is in charge, me, the visitors or Museumnacht?
